There is a HUGE flaw in the DNS server software and I did update it but not 100% sure if it fixed the issue. This is internet wide, to consider the seriousness of this I'm surprised its not all over the news as it could be VERY dangerous.

The flaw allows an attacker to redirect ANY domain/subdomain to ANY IP.

So a hacker could actually take over a banking domain and redirect to a fake banking site so when you log in they get your username and password.

I have yet to hear a clear explanation of the flaw, but basically it allows the attacker to change DNS records on any internet facing DNS server.

The DNS for AoV is managed by ns1.iceteks.net and ns2.iceteks.net which are actually on the same physical server for now.

Should any issues arise take note of these IPs:

News ::  Jul 20 2008 8:21:51 pm  -  Emergency update [July 20 08] - mobile aura bug
* Fixed a crash bug with mobile aura. I never found the 100% cause of it, but think it crashed if the aura was about to hit a mob that had just been dispelled. The timing to get that was insane. I was basically brute forcing to try and reproduce on dev shard and managed to have a macro going where it would crash within less than a minute. Then I did a fix and its now been running for 10ish minutes with no crash so I *think* I fixed it.

* Did a few minor changes to pet AI, please report any issues.

* Velocity property that appears on bows has had its damage increased.

* Mobs now do more damage to pets depending on how long they've been unsupervised. Abandoned pet = unhappy + sensible pet. Supervise your pets and all should be good. Please also report any issues with this if its too intense or what not. This should not be noticeable if you leave your pet or invis for less than a minute then come back.

Event ::  Jul 16 2008 1:55:24 pm  -  Strange Occurances at the Magincia Ruins
It's been over 8 months since the invasion that tore apart Magincia. The demons of the void, the light demons and demon berserkers showed no mercy in sparing the lives of the innocent citizens.

All that was left of magincia was a smoldering pile, rubble from the leftover shops and houses. Few escaped with their lives. The survivors fled to jhelom, moonglow and skara brae, afraid to return to their homes in case the demons returned.

It's been quite some time since the invasion and a group of thieves have recently ventured into the ruins of Magincia to loot some relics and goods to sell through the black market. After all, some people would pay highly for some of their possessions that were seemingly "lost" in the ruins of the city.

Just a few weeks ago however, the thieves found that they were no longer the only ones taking interest in the Magincia ruins. As the days rolled on, a wall appeared out of thin air, made from the debris of the Magincia ruins.

Somebody might be trying to rebuild their home perhaps? The thieves thought the same thing, but the strange part is nobody noticed who was building the wall.

One thief reported that he saw "Rubble floating in the air". Perhaps the spirits of the dead victims trying to ward off looters?

Could that explain the wall's existence? During the last few weeks, the wall seems to have doubled in size but still, nobody has a clue of who (Or what) is building it. Some people have gathered outside of Magincia to observe from a distance. Some claim that they've seen "dark red eyes" around the ruins at night.

The Standard is not sure exactly what's been going on but we'll be periodically reporting more facts as we receive them.

Right now we will be taking a break of coding major systems and mostly concentrating on smaller stuff as well as fixing any bugs/issues as they rise. However there is still enough left to do such as:

-more events: maze, treasure chest, mob race, free for all etc - pvp tourney was probably the hardest of those to code, and I'm actually very surprised at how well it turned out, very little issues on live. Still a few to sort out but none are major, and none have caused a crash or emergency state.

- ML zoo system / artifacts

- ML libraries / artifacts

(we don't have plans yet for those, but may or may not add them)

- Race/gender change stuff

- Quests - these are partially started


Though before all that even happens I have plans to revamp some major core stuff in the system. RunUO has TONS of really bad code design throghout all of it, such as how items/mob properties work and are applied. The "database" system is lacking in scalability and performance, as well as Windows being native platform is well, not exactly the best idea for a server application.

So some major back end system changes I plan to start on over time are:

- Make shard run fully on Linux
- Use Mysql as the storage engine for everything
- Redo AoS property system so that it is at core level, not hard coded into every equipment type (you should see all the typecasting required for aos props - BRUTAL)

Those 3 things right there will majorly improve code and performance, making it easier to code more stuff. Using mysql will require no world saves if done the way I have in mind.

I barely looked into any of these things, they're just ideas thrown in the air at this point, and they are rather involved.


Also non aov related plans include me starting a hosting company. I want code a full blown hosting control panel (like cpanel) and do some webhosting. I'm going to need to revamp my custom C++ libraries before starting on this project, but I hope to get started by September on it. I will host my own sites on this server and see how that goes then start hosting other clients, if it works out then I will get another dedicated server and go from there. I want to ensure my hosting app is extremely easy to deploy so I can fire up a new server in less then an hour and start to setup hosting. The idea behind it will be scalability to span accross several servers, and ease of use. This will of course mean extra cash coming through. Who knows, if I make a fortune I could do without a full time job then really zoom through this shard. :D But I will most likely keep my full time job anyway for the job security aspect.


Only danger though is my parents are now trying to get me hooked up with a girl friend, so if that happens none of this will actually happen, and I will not be able to even fix any bugs anymore. But hopefully I can postpone the girl friend thing for as long as possible so I don't have to drop all my hobbies. :shock: Not willing to throw away my life and independence, just yet. This shard is my passion and I can't believe myself all the work we've put into it.


So yeah, thats the jist of what is in for AoV's future.

* Removed house rubble feature for house demolishing. It now creates a special region where owner is only allowed to place in that spot. After some random time (30-60 minutes) it will go public.

* Fixed issue where a deleted event could actually start and it would jam up event system

* Food created from "Create food" spell can no longer be sold to NPC vendors

MOBILES

* Did some tweaking to quite a few bosses and monsters:

- Agapite Elemental: Immune Poison LEVEL 4
- Ancient Lich: Summons lesser undead. Can polymorph into another monster to confuse players
- Betrayer: Lethal Poison Gas (Like yamandons). Stunning Blow (Like Golems)
- Bogling: Immune Poison
- Changeling and derivatives such as travesty: no longer turn to naked humans when turning into another monster
- Chaos Daemon: Crushing Blow
- Chaos Dragoon/Elite: Coded in
- Copper Elemental: Reflects all spells. Reflect 50% of melee. Immune level 4 poison
- Crystal Lattice Seeker: No longer leech mana, only stam and hits
- Dull Copper Elemental: Immune L4 poison
- Executioner: Reflects ALL physical damage (Certain chance to, not 100%)
- Fan Dancers: Reflect Physical Damage

- Spynx: Shell coded (Fortune Telling will come later)
- Tentacles of the Harrower: Immune bard and poison. The tentacles have a magical force which nullifies arrows and magic from long range.
- Tsuki Wolf: Rage attack increased
- Verite Elemental: Immune L4 Poison
- Wanderer of the Void: Immune Poison
- Yomotsu Elders: Axe throw
- Yomotsu Priest: Polymorphs to look like other UOSE creatures.
- Yomotsu Warriors: Dagger Throw.

NAMED
- Flurry/Mistral/Tempest/Miasma: Added LOS/NULL check so it does not jump out of bounds
- Queen Lamia: Reduced damage from bows
- Lady Jennifyr: Blueish color, like valorite. Reflects 50% of close melee damage (Only weapons, not bows). Chance to do 6x damage to pets.
- Lady Marai: Reflects ranged damage (Double damage to attacker)
- Master Jonath: Reflects spell damage
- Putrifier: Necromancy and gas attack like yamandons
- Sir Patrick: Flamestrike ability
- Swoop: Hit Points increased as of Publish 48
- Tangle: Like bog things, poison immune and barding immune

CHAMPS AND PEERLESS
- Barracoon: Can polymorph you into a rat, even if you aren't attacking him (Random target). Basic magic spells (Casts quickly but very low damage (No eval)).
- Fleshrenderer: High detect hidden skill
- Harrower: Smack talk (Like Lady Melisande). When the harrower dies, 1 million gold is dropped on the ground (Flames).
- Lady Melisande: Putrid nausea should cause subjects to puke (For effect)
- Lord Oaks: Can sometimes drop "A dirt patch" on the corpse (Rare).
- Monstrous Grizzle: Cacophonic Blast does more harm depending on range.

* Added male version of succubus (called incubus). Incubus are identical to succubus cept black. Incubus are the male equivalents to succubi. Named succubus as well as semidar will not spawn the male equivalent (But might possibly in the future). Succubus do more drain to males and sometimes reflect their spells. Incubus are the same idea but VS females.

* Organized slayer group and added a ton of missing entries. It has received quite a generous reanalysis.

ITEMS

* Changed container gumps for the new elven containers (Bookshelves, armoires, boxes)

* Water gems are now only obtainable from fishing (Sea serpents summoned by fishing poles and water creatures summoned by nets)

* Fixed sound of a few abilities which were wrong

* Writeable books now have 40 pages

* Blade of Agony, which was a custom arty that was never suppose to be in game but got leaked, has now been added as a level 3 peerless artifact. See content DB for crafting requirements.

GM/STAFF

* Fixed crash bug in weapons, which was only triggerable by GMs (changing wep damage combinations to certain values to cause negative number)

* When a staff member places a house it will now default to having invisible sign, be public, and have restrictdecay set to true (This is to speed up creation times for event maps).

FIXED BUGS/EXPLOITS

* Fixed a bug that caused vendors to crash if the owner was null (ex: character deleted)

* Due to confusion with bod rewards that let you go over the cap, the mining and blacksmithy skill bonuses on boots of construction worker and dread miner's gloves have been removed and replaced with other properties.

* It is no longer possible to release pets in guarded regions or 25 tiles within any player. This will prevent pet griefing.

* Fixed an issue with spawners where they would re-randomize the spawn date at system startup. This was an issue for spawners that have a delay of several hours, as it was possible for it to randomize too big of a value for it to spawn by next server wars.

SPELLS/ABILITIES

* Added particle effect for reflect physical

* Fixed buff icon for meditation (it now gets removed when you fully regen)

* The following spells now require real skill to cast:
Necro: Vampiric embrace, lich form, wraith form, horrific beast form
Spellweaving: Reaper form, ethereal voyage
Magery: polymorph, magic reflection, reactive armor
ninjitsu: animal form, mirror image

* Lightning strike is now capped at 30 for ranged weapons and 40 for melee

MAINTENANCE/CLEANING

* Did tons of code cleanup in mobile aura related code and other parts of the system.

* Did lot of other misc non mobile related code cleanup as well. This is RunUO, its a mess from the start, and theres tons of cleanup to do. ;)

MAPS/SPAWNS

* Updated server maps to match 6.0.8.0 in case any changes were made by EA (none that I've noticed)

EVENTS/QUESTS

* Automated PVP system introduced into the game. It will be tested throughout the week.

* When an event starts immediatly after the same event ran (ex: a repeat-run) the signup time will only be a fixed 5 minutes instead of whatever time is set for that event.

* Added serialization support for Rectangle3D, which is used in some events and other purposes

MISC/OTHER

* It is now a requirement for tamers to be in sight of their pets while they are fighting, or loyalty will drop very fast

* The reusable spare peerless keys will now have a decay timer on them (set to only decay once boss decay time is up). These keys are not good for anything once the peerless is dead anyway, so this is just to get rid of them and avoid confusion/scam and unecessary item count.

* Some peerless key timers have been changed up

Note: Please allow some time for any of the new creatures/items to be spawned. They will be added to contentDB as well

Also added a bit of security code in PM and Email functions.

I setup a non stop run pvp tournement on TC1, if anyone feels inclined feel free to go on with a few friends to help test the system. Basically try to see if you can break it, and crash the server and such. Report any issues you may find, such as the system jamming a tournement or if something totally does not make sense, like the looser of a match going up against someone else.

I also have it setup to use 2 arenas for faster matches, but normally we'll probably stick to one.

As you know, the masterpiece point system is going to be raised in the near future. For existing masterpiece weapons, they will also be raised.

However, in order for current masterpiece weapons to have its current points raised, your masterpiece weapon must have at least 1 point left.

DO NOT use up all your points as we may not be able to increase your weapon when the time comes.

Keep at least ONE point on it (If your weapon does not have any points on it or cannot be distinguished by staff to be a masterpiece weapon, it will not receive this bonus).
